Nathaniel Hawthore was an American novelist and short story author. He was born in 1804 in Salem, Massachusetts - the very state in which The Scarlet Letter takes place. Hawthorne recieved an education at Bowdoin college in 1821, and graduated in 1825. The first work he

published was a novel titled Fanshawe, in 1828. He was not happy with this novel, saying it was not a reflection of his best work. From there on out, he strived to only publish his best writings. One of them being the oh-so-acclaimed, The Scarlet Letter. Hawthorne went on to publich over thirty more novels and short stories.
